Dr. Patrick McCleer formed McCleer Power, Inc. in 1985 as an offshoot of his work in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan. McCleer Power, Inc. was founded on the premise that much of the necessary research being done in the area of energy conversion could be best performed in the private sector by small businesses.

Among the major projects undertaken by McCleer Power are:

McCleer Power has supplied research studies, hardware designs, prototypes, and consulting services to a wide range of institutional, governmental, and industrial clients, including: the Electric Power Research Institute, DOE Idaho Falls, U.S. Army Tank and Automotive Command, Whirlpool, General Motors Corporation, Ford Motor Company, General Dynamics Land Systems, Mechanical Technology, BalaDyne, Ingersol-Rand, Mechanical Products, Fasco, Visteon, Trico Automotive Products, and Allied Signal Aerospace. A majority of the work has been done internally, but on occasion McCleer has obtained additional staff or assistance from both Michigan State University and the University of Michigan.
